Boxing has long been known as the Sweet Science, a most noted sport that has created heroes and champions throughout its years. As a former competitive amateur boxer, as well, an accomplished athlete in several sports, I know how it feels to win and lose. Having coached and trained close to fourteen hundred people these last twelve years, I have come to develop numerous Absolute Training Formulas for SUCCESS.
This is why I have developed this Training Page, I wanted to share my knowledge for some of you out there to perhaps benefit. I also plan to answer the many questions I receive via email, for an example: What kind of bag should I buy? What about Kettlebells? How many times a week should I train?
The 1st of every month I will post different training programs, until pretty much you will have all the groundwork needed to be the best in shape boxer.
Down the road you will hear me talk quite a bit about discipline. Tony Corona in the above photos once said... “I would rather train a person with no athletic ability and has the heart to win, than train a gifted person with no heart”. Those words pretty much speaks the truth what champions are made of.

Athletic technology has finally made its way into boxing. The coaches of today realize it takes more than blood and sweat to win fights. These past few years, boxing coaches have been changing their training ideologies by integrating Cross Training Fitness into the workouts. In the days gone past, it was basically have the fighter get up and run long distance every day, then train him ‘till he dropped.
Today’s top pros hire fitness trainers and nutritionists to help them gain the edge over their opponent. For the amateur fighter they cannot afford to hire specialists. This is why it is so important for the old school amateur coaches to get current with the many benefits of diverse ways of training. With knowledge and willingness to change, the results will make for a better fighter, it WILL improve their performance, speed and power.
First up, a few boxing preliminaries... Boxing training begins the same as it always has since the old days. By first learning basic skills, such as proper stance along with a few simple and effective punches, followed with a series of combinations. After getting the foundation established then comes the long hours, day after day of punching practice/repetition, of which will develop timing, balance, and leverage
Footwork and distance is the second stage. Proper footwork is where punching power and stability is derived. Understanding Distance takes quite the time to nail down. As you learn the difference of fighting outside and inside, your Offensive tactics will steadily progress.
About Defense, 3 factors: 1) Correct hand positioning before and after punching, as in bringing your fist back. 2) Keeping your chin down. 3) Never take your eye off opponent. When these three are perfected, then next is advancing to Slipping, Ducking, and Weaving. The last part of Defense is to learn how to block opponent’s punches, then finally mastering Counter Punching.
All of the above fundamentals practiced a thousand times over is what will develop your skills, then on to sparring you go. The more a fighter spars, the more he learns to how to RELAX. By sparring you will be able to figure out what style best suites you, because, you will discover what is more effective for yourself.
Unquestionably, boxing is a true skill, it is a test of patience and heart. For some it takes years to master proper technique. There will always be those few that have tremendous athleticism, who are able to break all the fundamental rules, going on to become champions. You have seen such exceptions to the rule in all sports. For the majority is requires constant skill practice.
ALL RIGHT, TO SUM UP THIS PAGE Over the years I have trained athletes in all sports; from Pro Football, Hockey, Wrestlers, to MMA. Also having trained, Policemen, Firemen, FBI Agents, and Special Ops. In the months to come, I will be posting many different Cross Training workouts to coincide with your boxing. Hopefully, I will give some insight for the amateur boxer, for those starting out from scratch, and for anyone that might just need a few hints on fine tuning.
Thanks & see you July 1st. Joe Leinhauser 480-777-9170 ironglovesboxing@aol.com
